The League of American bicyclists ranked Arkansas as the least bicycle friendly state out of all 50 states. This may be shocking to Central Arkansas residents because cyclists are visible throughout our area. Although Arkansas was number 50 on the list, three communities in our state were labeled Bicycle Friendly Communities including, North Little Rock.
Cyclists in our area contribute to the local community. Cycling is more than a great recreational activity. It attracts new businesses centered on health and cycling which in turn increase the local tax base and economy because cycling events attract thousands of riders each year.
Unless it is on a designated bike path, riders have to constantly be aware of cars and the drivers who may or may not be willing to share the road. The League of American Bicyclists uses the following criteria used for scoring each state:
Legislation and Enforcement
Policies and Programs
Infrastructure and Funding
Education and Encouragement
Evaluation and Planning
Safe drivers follow traffic laws and safe cyclists do too! Currently there is no law in Arkansas that requires cyclists to wear helmets but it is always a good idea. In the news, it was reported that Circuit Judge Wendell Griffen is recovering from a bicycle accident that occurred earlier today. The Judge was wearing his helmet but still suffered some lacerations, bruises and swelling. It is a reminder that accidents happen. In addition to following traffic laws and wearing safety gear, bicycle maintenance is important to reducing injuries. The U.S. consumer Product Safety Commission lists bike related recalls on its website to further reduce risks.
