What Does Your Auto Insurance Policy Cover?

Did you know that if you are a passenger in someone else’s automobile, and not the driver, that you can sometimes recover under your own automobile policy or the policy of a family member you live with? This may be surprising because for most car insurance policies, the insurance policy remains with the vehicle and not the driver. For example, if you let someone else drive your car, you and your insurance company could still be liable to pay for any expenses due to injuries from an accident. It is important to know what coverage you have under your insurance policy because if the worst happens and you or a family member are involved in a car accident, serious injuries can generate medical expenses that far exceed the amount of money you can recover from one insurance policy.

Your insurance policy has a limit. In Arkansas, there is a mandatory amount of coverage for every automobile owner. The minimum liability you are required to carry by law is $25,000 per person for bodily injury, $50,000 per accident and $25,000 to cover property damage to other’s property. Liability coverage pays for claims when you are at fault but if the other person is at fault you may expect to rely on their insurance policy. Unfortunately, sometimes a car accident involves someone who does not have the minimum amount of coverage or enough coverage to help you. Underinsured motorist, uninsured motorist, and personal injury protection provide additional coverage. The expenses after an accident can add up quickly if you have been seriously injured. Lost wages, medical treatment, hospital visits, doctor visits, prescriptions, and other medical expenses can add up to an intimidating sum.  Getting the right help can make all the difference in the world in making sure that your bills are paid for. You may be scared to get the medical treatment you need following an accident if you believe you will have to pay for it. Waiting too long to seek treatment can cause you to miss out on policy coverage if there is a time limit on the insurance policy.
